Biopsies were taken from young untrained (YUT) women (23±2 years old) 4 hours after the first resistance exercise. Fibers were separated under the light microscope and MHC isoform was determinated based on SDS-PAGE analysis. Exclusion criteria: acute/chronic illness, cardiac, pulmonary, liver, or kidney abnormalities, uncontrolled hypertension, insulin or non-insulin-dependent diabetes, abnormal blood, or urine chemistries, arthritis, a history of neuromuscular problems, tobacco smoking. Individuals, that had ever completed any formal exercise programs or physical activity outside of their activities of daily living, were excluded as well.

Samples were prepared from hearts explanted during an orthotopic heart transplantation. Patients have no history of cardiac infarction and/or coronary stenosis.

Right ventricle derived myocardial tissue samples obtained from non-failing control hearts. Non-failing donor hearts were not transplanted due to technical reasons and were removed from donor for cardiac valve grafting.

Synovial fibroblast samples isolated from affected knee of patients with rheumatoid factor positive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were stimulated by 10 ng/ml of TGF-ß in serum-free DMEM for 2 hours. Synovial fibroblasts were isolated from surgically obtained synovial membrane by trypsin/collagenase digestion, followed by negative purification using CD-14 Dynabeads® M-450. Before the TGF-ß stimulation, fibroblasts were cultured for four passages in DMEM medium supplemented with antibiotics and 10% FCS. The RA was classified according to the criteria of the American College of Rheumatology. Average duration of RA: 11.5 ± 0.5 years. Patients were receiving non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs. CRP: 38.1 ± 7.2 mg/l.
