Ischaemicly preconditioned (IPC) quadriceps muscle biopsy taken 1 hour after the start of primary total knee arthroplasty surgery. IPC was induced by three five-minutes cycles of tourniquet insufflation interrupted by five-minute cycles of reperfusion. Tourniquet was placed on the upper thigh of the operative limb after the administration of spinal anaesthesia and was set 100 mm Hg above the patient?s systolic blood pressure. Patient characteristics: normal ankle brachial index; no inflammatory arthropathy; non-diabetic; no rheumatoid arthritis.
