Blood samples from intensive care unit patients 48 hours after severe septic shock (SAPS II-high). Severity was assessed using SAPS II score. Septic shock was defined as the combination of SIRS and an infection. To be diagnosed with SIRS patients had to show at least two of the following clinical situation: hypothermia (<36?C) or hyperthermia (>38?C), tachycardia (>90/min), tachypnea (>20 breaths/min) and/or arterial PCO2 of 32 mmHg or lower and/or mechanical ventilation, and leukocytosis (>12,000/mm3) or leukopenia (<4,000/mm3). Septic shock was defined as acute circulatory failure (systolic blood pressure <90 mmHg, mean arterial pressure <65 mmHg, or a reduction in systolic blood pressure >40 mmHg from baseline). In order to avoid confounding effects, patients with human immunodeficiency syndrome, hematologic malignancies evolving from insulin-dependent diabetes, dialyzed chronic renal failure, chronic liver disease stages III and more or patients receiving immunosuppressive therapy were excluded from the study.
