Engineered kidney tissue created by recombining an in vitro budded Wolffian duct (WD) with fresh E13 metanephric mesenchyme (MM). Non-branched in vitro-formed ureteric buds (UBs) were dissected from the extracellular matrix gel (ECM) after 7-10 days of cultivation and then placed in contact with freshly isolated MM (isolated from kidneys at E13.5). Afterwards the recombination was co-cultured on a transfilter for another 6 days in DMEM/F12 plus 10% FCS. The urogenital tract was isolated from timed pregnant Holtzman rats.
