Lung tissue samples isolated from male Sprague Dawley rats (250-350g) with a brain sham surgery. Briefly, a midline incision was made through the scalp. A burr hole was drilled to expose the dura mater on intubated and ventilated rats after anesthesia for 4 hours. The mean arterial main blood pressure was controlled via intravenous catheter in common carotid artery. 15 minutes after the beginning of ventilation animals received saline. Lungs were harvested at the end of 4 hours.

Before use microspheres were sterilized with 70% ethanol, washed with sterile 0.01% Tween 20 and resuspended in 0.01 % Tween 20 to a final 10% concentration.
